Do we really have to answer this question? With over 130 million records sold, the Backstreet Boys are none other than the most successful boy band of all time.
Founded in 1993 in Orlando, Florida, by music manager Lou Perlman at a talent competition, the band consists of the five singers Howie Dorough, Alexander James "AJ" McLean, Nick Carter, Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson. The boygroup was named after a flea market in Orlando, the so-called "Backstreet Flea Market".
Everyone knows them, some love them, some hate them: the greatest hits of the Backstreet Boys. In the beginning the success of the Backstreet Boys was concentrated in Europe and there especially in Germany. In 1996 the single "Quit Playin' Games with My Heart" was released on the debut album "Backstreet Boys", which reached number one in Germany and was even awarded platinum. In 1997 the single also reached platinum status in the USA and entered the charts at number two.
1997 was also the year in which the second album "Backstreet's Back" was released. On this album, too, fans could find a mega hit: "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" debuted at number two in Germany.
Album number three called "Millenium" sold 1.3 million copies in the USA in the first week after its release. Especially the song "I Want It That Way" enjoyed great popularity and is still one of the most popular songs of the 90s.
The Best Of album of the Backstreet Boys was released at the end of 2001 and sold 7 million copies. Shortly thereafter it became known that band member AJ suffers from a strong alcohol and drug addiction. This led to rumours and speculations about a possible break-up of the boy band, which did not prove to be true. Instead of separating, the band took a musical break.
In 2002 Nick Carter started his solo career with the album "Now or Never", but remained a member of the Backstreet Boys. When Brian Littrell released his solo album "Welcome Home" in 2006, rumours of separation among the fans started to boil up again. In the same year Kevin Richardson was the first member to officially leave the group for personal reasons.
In 2010, the Backstreet Boys and the boy band New Kids On The Block (NKOTB) performed together at the American Music Awards, combining songs from both bands and presenting them in a joint choreography. They also performed the same show at the New Year's Eve celebration in New York's Times Square in front of over a million spectators. The two boy groups released their first joint song "Don't Turn Out The Lights" at the end of 2010 and even went on tour together as NKOTBSB a year later.
In 2012 Kevin returned and recorded the album "It's Christmas Time Again" with the rest of the band. His return was already announced during a NKOTBSB concert in London.
From 2017 to 2019 the Boygroup played a permanent Las Vegas show called "Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life". During this time the members also wrote their ninth album "DNA", which was released in early 2019 and will be presented on the current tour. So it looks like the five Backstreet Boys are planning their future together as a band and have no intention of breaking up soon. According to AJ McLean, the band never broke up during the whole time as they had continued to make music together even after Kevin's departure.
The "DNA World Tour" is the biggest arena tour of the Backstreet Boys since almost 20 years. Beside their old hits the boys also play songs from their new album "DNA".
