Elton John was born on 25 March 1947 in Pinner, England, under the name Reginald Kenneth Dwight. At the age of three he played, to the astonishment of his parents, the ice skater waltz by ear, and it was clear that little Reginald should pursue a musical career. At the age of eleven, Elton John received a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London for six years. Following his studies, he founded the band Bluesology with fellow students in 1965, with which they accompanied the band Long John Baldry, whose members Elton Dean and John Baldry inspired the young Reginald to his stage name Elton John.
In 1989 Elton John's first solo album "Empty Sky" was released and received good reviews despite bad sales figures. The second album "Elton John" finally helped him to break through when the single "Your Song" reached the top ten of the American and British charts. Hits like "Rocket Man", "Crocodile Rock", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" made Elton John one of the most successful musicians of the 70s. The album "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt" immediately reached number one in the US charts. After releasing his song "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", Elton John's success and popularity in the USA sank with the rising popularity of punk and disco.
In 1979, Elton John made headlines as he was the first western musician to play concerts in the Soviet Union.
In the 80's, Elton John turned to ballads again and could celebrate great chart success with songs like "I'm Still Standing" and "Nikita".
Besides music, Elton John is also involved in numerous charitable projects. Due to his heavy drug consumption and the accompanying laryngeal surgery, Elton John disappeared from public life in 1989 and underwent drug rehabilitation. During this musical break, the singer also founded his AIDS Foundation.
Elton John celebrated his brilliant comeback in 1992 with his album "The One", which sold over 16 million copies worldwide. The proceeds from the sale of the album in the US went entirely to his AIDS foundation. On his tour, he presented the album to over 3.6 million viewers in over 100 concerts.
In 1994, Elton John received an Oscar for Best Film Song for "Can You Feel The Love Tonight", which is part of the soundtrack of the Disney movie "The Lion King". In the same year he was accepted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The single "Something About The Way You Look Tonight", which he composed in honour of the deceased Princess Diana, was regarded as the most successful single of all time with 45 million copies sold. The proceeds went to the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.
In 1995, the exceptional talent was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II and later knighted, so that he can now call himself Sir Elton John, CBE.
In the 2000s Elton John landed several number one hits in the USA, Great Britain and Australia and sang together with artists like the band Blue, Eminem and the Scissor Sisters.
In early 2018, Elton John announced his final three-year tour, which began in September 2018 in the United States and will include over 300 concerts in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, South America and Australia.
