Eric Clapton facts

Eric Clapton was born in England in 1945 as the son of 16-year-old Patricia Molly Clapton and was raised by his grandparents believing that his young mother was his big sister and his grandparents were his real parents. At the age of nine, Eric Clapton learned of his true ancestry, which he remembered as an incisive experience.
Eric Clapton enrolled to study art at Kingston University in London, but dropped out to join the R&B band The Roosters at the age of 17. After the band split up, Clapton played guitar with the Yardbirds, who released the hit "For Your Love" in 1965. After a short collaboration with the Bluesbreakers, Clapton founded the rock band Cream together with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce. The band celebrated commercial success with hits like "I Feel Free", "Sunshine Of Your Love" and "White Room". Due to recurring disputes among the members, Eric Clapton began to write and sing his own songs. In 1968, Cream disbanded. Clapton recorded his first solo album in 1970 and landed directly in the US charts with the song "After Midnight". Together with numerous well-known musicians he recorded the album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs". Its title song "Layla" was one of the most successful rock songs of the 70s.
At the beginning of the 70's, Clapton became more and more addicted to drugs, especially heroin, until he collapsed on stage during a performance in 1971. Through a therapy he got his addiction under control again, so that he could produce new records in the 80's again. Especially the albums "Behind The Sun" and "August", recorded together with Phil Collins, were bestsellers in Great Britain. At this time he also began to compose film music, among others for the movie "Lethal Weapon".
In 1991, Eric Clapton had to experience the tragic death of his four-year-old son Conor, who fell from the 53rd floor of a New York skyscraper. The musician processed his grief in the songs "Circus" and "Tears in Heaven". He won six Grammy Awards for the MTV unplugged session of the songs.
In the 2000s, Eric Clapton hosted numerous charity events and donated his earnings. In 2016, Clapton released his 16th studio album "I Still Do", a mix of rock and blues tracks.
