Florence + the Machine Facts:

Who is Florence and the Machine?

The band Florence + the Machine was founded in 2007 by the vocalist Florence Welch, keyboardist Isabella Summers and a group of other musicians. Some of the band’s success is due to the BBC who promoted them as part of “BBC Introducing”. Florence + the Machine’s sound is a unique mix of dramatic music and the powerful voice of Florence Welch. Their unique sound combines indie rock and soul. For this new style Florence and the Machine was nominated for the 2010 Grammy Award for “Best New Artist”. The single “The Dog Days Are Over” is one of their best known tracks.

Who is Florence Welch?

Lead singer Florence Welch is known for her red hair, but naturally she is brunette and has been dying it since the age of 9. She actually dropped out of art school, where she studied fashion, to become a rock star.  Florence Welch and Taylor Swift are good friends. Taylor Swift once said, "What sets Florence apart? Everything. Every time I've been around her, she is the most magnetic person in the room."

Which Florence and the Machine albums are there?

In 2009 the band released their debut album “Lungs” which landed on number two of the UK Album Charts until 2010 when it finally reached number one. At that time the album became the UK’s best-selling album of 2009 and 2010. The following two albums “Ceremonials” and “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” also reached the top of the charts in the UK. The latter even landed on number one in eight countries. Florence Welch was the first British woman in this century to headline the Glastonbury Festival in 2015. On 29 June 2018 the band released their fourth album called “High as Hope” with the megahit “Hunger”. In 2019 Florence + the Machine featured their song “Jenny of Oldstones” in the episode “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” of the popular series “Game of Thrones”.

What are Florence and the Machine’s biggest hits?

The band’s biggest hit to date is “You’ve Got the Love” – a cover version of the Candi Staton classic. Originally, it was a B-side to Florence and the Machine’s single “Dog Days Are Over” but was released as a full single afterwards. The song reached number five on the British charts in 2010. The single sold over 1,2 million copies. Speaking of “Dog Days Are Over” – it also is one of Flo’s most popular hits despite debuting at number 23.
The single “Spectrum”, better known by the words “Say My Name” than by its real title, spent several weeks at number one in 2012 after being sampled by Calvin Harris who gave it a more danceable makeover. The second number one single in 2012 was “Sweet Nothing”, which was also modified by Calvin Harris.
