Green Day Facts

Who is Green Day?

Green Day is an American punk band founded in 1987 under the name Sweet Children by Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Al Sobrante at the age of 15. Even then, the band was well received in the local California punk scene. In 1989 the band changed their name to Green Day after signing their first record deal and releasing their first EP. In 1990 Al Sobrante left the band and was replaced by Tré Cool, who is still the third official band member, on the drums. Jason White is the fourth, but unofficial band member and plays the guitar.

How did Green Day get their name?

The name Green Day refers to the Californian slang term of the same name. "Green Day" refers to a boring day spent smoking marijuana. A phenomenon that the members of the band were quite familiar with at that time.

What is Green Day's best album?

In their 30-year career, Green Day has released a total of 12 studio albums. In 1990 the band released their debut album "39/Smooth", which they recorded in only 22 hours. With their second album "Kerplunk!" Green Day made a name for themselves in the indie scene and got a contract with the major label Warner, where their third album "Dookie" was released in 1994. Now the punk band had clearly arrived in the mainstream and heralded a real punk revival. With their sixth album "Warning" Green Day changed their music style for the first time away from punk and towards classical rock. After the band had some demo tapes stolen from the studio in 2003, they started working on the album "American Idiot". The album catapulted Green Day directly to number one in the album charts in 2004 and was the catalyst for their big international breakthrough. After this success, Green Day kept their fans waiting for five years until the album's successor "21st Century Breakdown" was released in 2009. This album was also a huge success and earned the band countless awards. However, Green Day received mixed reviews for the album trilogy "Uno", "Dos" and "Tré". The last album "Revolution Radio" was released in 2016. For 2020 the band has already announced a new album called "Father Of All..." and brand new singles. The album will be released in February 2020. You can listen to the first song here.

Has Green Day split up?

After the release of the album "Warning" in 2000 there was a break within the band for the first time. The members were no longer satisfied with their musical performances, which led to severe writing blockages for Billie Joe Armstrong. Instead of separating, Green Day decided to talk about their feelings and fears to prevent the worst. A short time later all doubts were forgotten and the band started making music together again.

What do I need to know about Green Day's new tour?

After rumours have been already coming up everywhere, it's finally official: Green Day is going on a big world tour in 2020, the Hella Mega Tour. As the name promises, this tour will be gigantic: the rock bands Weezer and Fall Out Boy will also be part of it. All three bands have announced further good news together with their tour announcement: Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy will each release brand new albums in 2020 and present them on the tour. Currently, dates for concerts in the USA, Europe and the UK were released. Whether the tour will be extended and fans in Australia and New Zealand will have a reason to rock out, we will probably find out next year. Until then you can listen to the best Green Day songs here:
