All about Gregory Porter

Who is Gregory Porter?

Gregory Porter was born on November 4, 1971 in Sacramento, USA, and already sang in the gospel choir with his mother as a child. He grew up in the town of Bakersfield and has seven siblings. He developed a deep love for jazz and blues at an early age, his first role models being the musicians Nat King Cole, Leon Thomas and Nina Simone. He received a Grammy Award for his songs "Liquid Spirit" and "Take Met o the Alley". During his studies Gregory Porter almost started a promising football career, which he couldn't start because of a shoulder injury - in retrospect definitely a blessing in disguise.

Who is Gregory Porter married to?

The singer is married to Victoria Porter, with whom he has a son, Demyan. The family lives in Bakersfield, California, where Gregory Porter grew up.

What albums has Gregory Porter already released?

In 2010 Gregory Porter released his first album "Water". Two years later "Be Good" was released. After that he changed his record label and celebrated his breakthrough with the third album "Liquid Spirit" in 2013. The album won a Grammy Award and reached the top ten in Great Britain, which is an extremely rare success for a jazz album. In 2016 the follow-up album "Take Me To The Alley" and "Live in Berlin" were released. On his album "Nat King Cole & Me" Gregory Porter sings songs inspired by jazz legend Nat King Cole. His latest album, a live album from his performance at London's Royal Albert Hall, was released in 2018 and another studio album has already been announced for autumn 2019.

What's the deal with Gregory Porter's hat?

When Gregory Porter appears in public, you usually never see him without his characteristic Deerstalker cap covering his ears and chin. Originally, Gregory Porter wore the cap to hide his scars, which were created during an operation. The singer wore the cap even before his career began. In the meantime, however, this cap has become his trademark, so he continues to wear it during his live appearances. In an interview Gregory Porter lovingly called his hat his "jazz hat".
