About Metallica

The founding of the band began in 1981 with an advertisement that Danish-born drummer Lars Ulrich who was looking for band members, placed in a Los Angeles newspaper calles The Recycler. The ad read: “Drummer looking for other metal musicians to jam with. Tygers of Pan Tang, Diamond Head and Iron Maiden.” The guitarist James Hetfield answered and five months later, Metallica was born. Through another advertisement the two artists found a lead guitarist named Dave Mustaine. On Metallica’s first sampler called “Metal Massacre” that was released in 1982, the band’s name was falsely typed Mettallica but was nonetheless a great success for the band. They played their first concert at the Radio City Hall in Anaheim, California in 1982 with their new bassist Ron McGovney. Later, he was replaced by the bassist Cliff Burton. Shortly before the start of the recordings of their first studio album, Mustaine was replaced by Kirk Hammett because of his aggressive behavior and drug abuse. Their debut album “Kill ‘Em All” was the foundation of a large and growing fan base in the metal scene. Metallica’s third album “Master of Puppets” was certified gold in 1986 and is by now the band’s most played song with a total of 1256 live plays. The same year, Metallica supported Ozzy Osbourne on his US tour. Later in 1986, during the band’s Europe tour, Cliff Burton died in Sweden after their tour bus lost control and flipped over. After some doubts, Metallica decided to carry on and replaced Burton with Hammett’s childhood friend Jason Newsted who left the band in 2001. Eventually Robert Trujillo took his place and is still one of Metallica’s members. They have performed with a variety of artists like Lou Reed, Chinese pianist Lang Lang or Lady Gaga.
