Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born on 20 February 1988 on the Caribbean island of Barbados, where reggae and R&B music were her early influences. In 2003, Rihanna and two friends founded a girl band that sang to music producer Evan Rogers when he was on a Barbados holiday. He was so enthusiastic about Rihanna's voice that he let her audition to Jay Z, who immediately signed her to his label. Already the first single she recorded, "Pon De Replay", reached the top ten worldwide in 2005. Her debut album "Music of the Sun" sold over two million copies worldwide. The success was even surpassed by the following album "A Girl Like Me" with the singles "SOS" and "Unfaithful". "SOS" became Rihannas first number one single in the USA.
With the third album "Good Girl Done Bad" she honoured the album title and turned away from R&B to dance-pop and dressed more and more freely. The hit "Umbrella" catapulted the young singer to the top of the charts worldwide.
After the violent relationship with singer Chris Brown, Rihanna worked through her worries in the album "Rated R", which offers a rockier and harder sound than its predecessors. Especially the album cover, on which Rihanna shows herself bound naked in barbed wire, as well as the ballad "Russian Roulette" caused a worldwide sensation.
Not only as a solo artist Rihanna celebrated one success after another. For the rapper T.I. she sang on his number one song "Live Your Life" as a guest musician and thus helped the rapper to international fame. Eminem also reached number one in the US charts in 2010 with "Love the Way You Lie", which he recorded together with Rihanna.
In 2012, the singer released the single "Diamonds", which stayed in the charts all over the world for weeks. The album "Unapologetic" became a sales hit and sold better than any of her previous albums.
Rihanna celebrated another musical success in 2016 with her album "Anti". The single "Work" featuring Drake reached the top of the charts in the US and became Rihanna's fourteenth number one hit there. In the same year, Rihanna introduced her collection Fenty x Puma, which she designed for the sporting goods manufacturer Puma. Most recently, Rihanna's Anti World Tour was seen live by fans around the world in 2016.
