Shakira Facts

Who is Shakira and what is her real name?

Shakira was born on 2 February 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia. Her father, Don William Mebarak Chadid, comes from Lebanon and works as a jeweller and writer; her mother, Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado, was born in Colombia. Shakira's real name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll. Translated from Arabic (شاكِرة, DMG šākira) means "the grateful one". When Shakira was 17 years old, she moved with her family to Bogotá, but left Colombia when she was of age and moved to Florida. With the football star Gerard Piqué, with whom she now lives in Barcelona, the singer has two sons. Shakira is a real talent for languages and speaks Spanish, English, Portuguese, Italian, French and Catalan.
Already at the age of 13 Shakira received a record contract after she presented a cassette on which she had recorded cover versions of the Madonna songs "Material Girl" and "La Isla Bonita" to a Sony manager. Her first album ("Magia") was released at the age of 14 and shortly after also the second one ("Peligro"). However, both flopped. Thereupon she decided to dedicate herself again to her graduation and to postpone her music career.

What albums did Shakira release?

After she had finished school, Shakira's album "Pies descalzos" was released in 1995 and had a considerable commercial success with five million copies sold. The single "Estoy aquí" reached number one in Colombia. With the second album "¿Dónde están los ladrones?", especially with the single "Ojos así", she was able to further increase her international success. The singer Gloria Estefan began working with Shakira on an English album in 2001. "Laundry Service" sold 13 million copies and received numerous listeners all over the world due to its English lyrics. After the release, the singer went on her first big world tour, which included a live album and a DVD.
In 2005 the album "Fijación oral vol. 1" was released, which won Shakira a Grammy Award in the category Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. "Oral Fixation vol. 2" followed in the same year.
Shakira experienced a small setback in 2009 with the album "She Wolf", which was released in Latin America under the name "Loba". With "Sale el sol", which was predominantly Spanish, Shakira's success picked up speed again in 2010. After a longer break, the album "Shakira" was released in 2014, on which also the song "Can't Remember to Forget You" with Rihanna appeared. The latest album "El Dorado" was last released in 2017.

How much is Shakira worth?

Shakira's net value is estimated at about 350 million dollars. She earns the most money with her music: she has sold over 125 million albums all over the world, 25 million of them in the USA alone. After Gloria Estefan, Shakira is the second most successful Latina in the music business and the most successful Colombian singer in the world.
In addition to music, the singer is also involved in the Pies Descalzos Foundation, which supports poor children in Colombia.

What are Shakira's most popular hits?

With the singles "Whenever, Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes" from the album "Laundry Service" Shakira had her global breakthrough in 2001. But the most successful song to date is the single "Hips Don't Lie" from the second version of the 2006 album "Oral Fixation vol. 2", which she recorded together with Fugees singer Wyclef Jean. Shakira and Wyclef Jean performed their hit at the finale of the 2006 Football World Cup in Berlin's Olympic Stadium. Football fans seem to be big Shakira fans, because the singer also contributed the official song "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" to the 2010 World Cup. The song reached first place in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and is the most successful World Cup song of all time.
On her latest album "El Dorado" the single "Chantaje" was released together with the Colombian singer Maluma. The song received numerous awards and sold more than 2 million copies in a short time.

Will Shakira be on tour in 2019/2020?

In 2018 Shakira finished her El Dorado World Tour, during which she visited Europe, Asia, North and Latin America for a total of 54 shows. The tour was originally scheduled to start in 2017, but had to be postponed to 2018 due to a vocal cord bleeding. At the moment there are no official statements about an upcoming tour or a new album, but since Shakira has taken three years for each of her last two albums, it is likely that we won't hear from the singer again until 2021.
