Shreya Ghoshal was born on March 12, 1984 in Baharampur, West Bengal in India. She grew up in the small town of Rawatbhata in Rajasthan as a child of an electrical engineer and a literature graduate. Shreya also has a younger brother. At the age of four, she started studying music. During her school years she regularly took singing lessons.
In 2000, when Shreya was 16 years old, she won the TV music show Sa Re Ga Ma, marking the beginning of her career. She was discovered by Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who promptly gave her the chance to sing five songs in his successful Bollywood film "Devdas" as the voice of the female lead role Paro (played by Aishwarya Rai). For her voice in Devdas, Shreya Ghoshal won both the Filmfare Award and the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer and a Filmfare RD Burman Award for Best Newcomer.
In the following years she sang in many other films and again won numerous awards. Shreya takes care of her reputation: she doesn’t want to get stuck on one image but shows her fans a different side of herself and her art whenever possible. Shreya Ghoshal goes on tour regularly. In 2013, she visited fans in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Mauritius and the United Arab Emirates.
In 2010, Shreya Ghoshal was honored by the Governor of the State of Ohio, who declared June 26th to "Shreya Ghoshal Day". Ghoshal was also honored by the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Forbes Magazine named Shreya Ghoshal as one of the 50 most successful Indian celebrities for five consecutive years.
