Sting was born as Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner on October 2nd 1951 in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, England. The love for the music began at an early age and Sting later decided to undergo career training as an English and music teacher at the Catholic St. Paul’s First School in Cramlington, England. In his free time he played smaller gigs with different bands and after he celebrated first successes, he decided to make it his main profession.
In 1977, Sting founded the new-wave band The Police alongside drummer Stewart Armstrong Copeland (*July 16th 1952) and guitar player Henry Padovani (*October 13th 1952) in London, England. Padovani was later replaced by Andy Summers. The band needed time to gain momentum - their first noteworthy success came in 1979 with their first Grammy-winning album “Reggatta de Blanc”. Since then the success train never stopped until Sting decided to pull the emergency cord in 1984 due to internal crises the band experienced. In 1985, Sting released his first solo album called “The Dream of the Blue Turtles” and the success appeared right away.
Over his 35-year long solo career, Sting released eleven studio albums alongside 38 single releases, selling more than 60 million disc carriers. He is considered one of the most successful musicians of the 20th century. His most famous compilations album “Fields of Gold – Best of 1984-94” was sold more than 6.6 million times alone and contains, inter alia, his most famous songs “Fields of Gold” and “When We Dance”. Sting was awarded the Golden Disc 130 times and the Platinum Disc 178 times for his music sales - this sum does not include the awards he achieved as a member of The Police.
Sting is a true all-rounder: Next to his activities as a musician, he also takes part in movie productions as an actor and heavily engages in social projects. He is an active member of the human rights organization “Amnesty International”, successfully protested against the construction of a dam in the Amazonas area and founded the “Rainforest Foundation” in 1987. In 2014, his musical “The Last Ship” debuted at the famous Broadway.
