About the Lumineers

In 2002 guitarist and vocalist Wesley Schultz and drummer Jeremiah Fraites formed a cover band in New Jersey and started performing together in New York City in 2005. In their early years they were known by several names including Free Beer, 6Cheek and Wesley Jeremiah. Over the years, the two began writing their own songs. However, they hadn't yet found their unmistakable folk-rock style. They came up with their current name The Lumineers when a band called Lumineers was to perform in a club in Jersey City. However, the presenter made a mistake and announced Wesley and Jeremiah as The Lumineers. After the expected success in New York was too long in coming for their taste, The Lumineers moved to Denver, Colorado.
There, cellist and singer Neyla Pekarek joined the band in 2010 and was the third band member until 2018. The trio met Maxwell Hughes at an open mic event shortly thereafter and he started to accompany the band as a tour member on his mandolin. The Lumineers also recorded their debut album with him, but split up shortly afterwards.
In 2011, the long-awaited record deal with Onto Entertainment who also worked with the Black Keys, the Cold War Kids and Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros, finally happened. In April 2012 the first studio album "The Lumineers" was released, which received good reviews and after some time landed at number two in the Billboard 200 charts. With their first song "Ho Hey" The Lumineers attracted worldwide attention in 2012. The song reached the top five in numerous American charts and was played up and down on the radio. Spotify described the song in October 2012 as the most shared song in Manhattan and the third most shared song in Brooklyn.
In 2016 the second album "Cleopatra" was released. The first single of the album, "Ophelia", continued the success of "Ho Hey" and reached the first places in various alternative charts. For the following tour, The Lumineers brought bassist Byron Isaacs on board to replace former tour bassist Ben Wahamaki. The world tour 2016/2017 took the band through the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia and even South Africa. In 2017 The Lumineers were also on tour with U2 in the USA as a support act. After the tour Neyla Pekarek left the band in 2018 to concentrate on her solo career.
In April 2019 The Lumineers announced their third album "III" on Instagram and released their first single "Gloria".
