In 2010, The Weeknd met the producer Jeremy Rose, who produced some R&B songs with him. In the same year, The Weeknd uploaded them anonymously on YouTube. At the beginning of his career, The Weeknd released the mixtape "House Of Balloons" on his homepage in 2011, which brought him a small circle of fans. At a concert, on which The Weeknd presented his mixtapes, he met the rapper Drake, who promptly offered him a collaboration. The Weeknd then appeared as the opening act for Drake. The Weeknd is also a guest musician in five songs on Drake's album "Take Care".
Following the release of the two other mixtapes "Thursday" and "Echoes Of Silence," which were celebraited by critics, The Weeknd has been offered numerous record deals. He was eventually signed by Republic Records and his own label imprint XO and released the compilation album "Trilogy", which is based on his earlier mixtapes. The album reached the top 10 in many countries and was awarded platinum. The Weeknd's second album "Kiss Land" was released in 2013 in cooperation with Drake. At this time, The Weeknd performed as the opening act for Justin Timberlake and contributed the song "Devil May Cry" to the soundtrack of the movie "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire". His song "Love Me Harder", for which he collaborated with Ariana Grande, reached number seven on the US charts.
The Weeknd's second soundtrack for a film was the single "Earned It" for "Fifty Shades Of Gray". The song climbed to the third place in the US charts. His song "Can’t Feel My Face" from the album "Beauty Behind The Madness" is The Weeknd's second number one hit in the US charts after "The Hills" from the same album. The album was also number one in the US, Canada, Australia and UK.
For his third studio album called "Starboy" The Weeknd got the support of the French electro duo Daft Punk.
The Weeknd already worked for artists like Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, Beyoncé and Kanye West.
